What to consider when
shopping for living room furniture
1 Measure your space
First things first - take some measurements of your space. Make note of outlet, fireplace, and window placements. It may be useful to take measurements of your existing furniture as well. The height and width of your sofa are relevant to that of your side table and vice versa. We encourage sketching everything out and bringing it with you when you shop. To make scaling easier, use graph paper.

2 Start with the basics
Most living rooms have a sofa, a coffee table, a few end tables, and several types of seating like loveseats or recliners. Get a basic idea of what you’ll need and map it into your living room layout. If your living room is small, you may opt for a loveseat rather than a sofa or a recliner rather than a loveseat. Find what works in your space. This will give you an idea of what else you have room for, like side tables, bookshelves, and ottomans.
3 Think about function
Are you hoping to entertain guests in your living room? Consider adding a few side tables for them to set their drinks. Do you want to watch TV in the evenings? Perhaps you should get a reclining sofa or an ottoman so you can relax how you want to. There are a lot of functions that can differ from living room to living room, so it’s best to think ahead.
